TVTC First Ironman Team Makes Impression on 2011 Races!

Aug 28, 2011

Training for a sprint, Olympic or even a 1/2 Ironman distance triathlon can be for the every man - the man with a job, a family, a life outside of triathlon. Training for an Ironman comes with its own special challenges, mostly with balancing life with training. In the peak months, two to three months from the event, training takes up a lot of time. the Ironman is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 bike ride, followed by a marathon of 26.2 of running. Yes, all in one day! :) And the training is many many hours of swimming, biking, running, eating to prepare for that one day, while trying to keep your job and spending time in your family.

TVTC made an amazing showing with our first set of Ironman athletes! Four special TVTC members this year took up the challenge! They each trained up to 11 months, completing races and other mile stone practices along the way to their Ironman days. All have demanding jobs, three are married, and two have children.

Our own Brian L. celebrated his 50th birthday by completing his first Ironman in Louisville KY on August 28. Proclaiming, he "didn't know what he was doing in training," crossed the finish line in 15:20.45 with a huge smile. He plans to complete a second in 2012. Brian lives in Fremont with his wife and three children.

Another Fremont member, Rajeev also completed his first Ironman, Vineman Full, on July 30. Despite challenges with bike shoes and batteries, he kept going strong with a 4:46:15 marathon. Rajeev, who only learned better swim form in the last year, posted an impressive 1:19 swim time!

TVTC happy man, Harpal, set his sights on Ironman Coeur d'Alene in June. Harpal, who learned how to swim in 2010, burst out of the lake in 2:02, well under the cut off time. He was the only person running up the beach after the swim, with a huge smile and pumping fist!! You never know what will happen race day, especially with nutrition. Due to heat cramps on a tough, hot course, Harpal finished the swim and 80 miles of the bike. But what a stellar accomplishment - 11 months of training, not only Three other Fremont athletes were also not able to finish due to hypothermia in the swim, He has already registered for next year, to conquer the entire course!!

Coach Liz finished Ironman Canada on August 28 with a time of 12:44.50 in 95 degree heat. Her second time on the course, she bettered every split, and dropped 2.5 hours total from her last completion in 2007.

Congratulations to all our Ironmen, who trained well, and conquered huge hurdles!
